The Yokohama City Central Library was constructed as one of the greatest public libraries in size throughout Japan, which can store 1,500,000 books, in order to satisfy the wide-ranging needs of citizens in the lifelong learning society.
A large scale open-shelf system and its unique shelf system arranged by themes have been adopted to give users easy access to a wealth of materials.
In addition, book search, lending and returning, and other operations are conducted more speedily by computer.
Furthermore, the underground stack rooms store as many as 1,200,000 materials and precious books which cannot be placed in open-shelves , and those materials are delivered to the counter of each floor through the transport system which S&S Engineering supplied.
