Tama-South Chiiki Hospital, Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Treatment Corporation, was opened as the core medical treatment facilities in the outer area of Tokyo, i.e., the five cities of Inagi, Tama, Hachioji, Hino, and Machida. The Hospital was opened, based on the long-term plan by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in the southern part of the Tama region where people were facing an acute shortage of medical institutions. Tokyo Metropolitan Government constructed the facilities, and Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Treatment Corporation, owned jointly by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Medical Association, has taken charge of the management of the Hospital. Tama-South Chiiki Hospital provides medical services in cooperation with the regional medical institutions while sharing the responsibilities.
In order to solve the long waiting time problem, the Hospital, in principle, accepts patients only under a referral system from the regional medical institutions except for emergency patients. Under the system, a patient's personal doctor at the Hospital provides the patient with medical treatment , and when the patient gets well, the patient goes back to and receives treatment from the doctor who referred the patient to the Hospital. At the Hospital, two kinds of S&S Engineering’s transport systems are now in use in order to back up this kind of medical treatment system. The two systems are: (1) a track system that carries out non-regular transport of medical records, X-ray films, sterilized materials, and other small articles, and (2) a large unmanned wagon transport system that conducts regular transport of meals and various kinds of large-size materials.
